Justice Brothers Surf School in Busua (GH)

“A story about Black surfers who teach the female surfers of Ghana”. This is how a documentary about them could be titled. When we first met them in 2022 we were tourists ourselves who were interested in surfing. We quickly became closer with Justice (the owner), Peter, Kelly and the other instructors who make this school so special.

Beside being superb teachers and elite surfers we noticed something else: girls (and boys) ranging 8-14 years being mentored by them. It wasn’t the surfing alone it was beyond that: every day we saw them playing, doing sports and even providing them food at the beach restaurant which is run by Tina and her family.

We could feel how much the kids loved the guys and how much the surfers cared. We were so touched so we decided to do a small documentary about them.

The fact that Justice and his brothers have tough times themselves doesn’t stop them from giving back and helping others where they can.

Its very hard in Ghana to get girls into sports especially a sport like surfing where parents are scared their kids could drown in the sea. Leave alone girls unfortunately are still pressured to do housework and be at home to help with family duties.

These facts make it even more remarkable what Justice and his team achieved. Today the girls we met 2 years ago are instructors themselves and striving to compete at surf events.

We can’t wait to meet them again in 2025 and expect a new documentary around them
